Solar Plant (PV) Model in EMTP for Transmission Interconnection Studies

Crrently positive sequence stability programs like PSS/E and DSA Tools is used to evaluate the interconnection of PV plants in the transmission system. Under certain system conditions, like low short circuit, it is suspected that the positive sequence stability programs may not provide the accurate response (e.g. voltage swings, oscillations, etc). Implementation of a PV plant model in a 3 phase time domain program such as EMTP helps to better investigate the response of the PV plants during system disturbances and contingencies. A generic inverter model and it’s D-Q control in EMTP for grid-connected PV is modeled in this project. This model is an aggregate representation of several individual PV inverters to simulate a large scale transmission grid-connected PV plant.

SVC Aggregate Motor Model

This project includes Fault Induced Delayed Voltage Recovery (FIDVR) scenarios advised by NERC to SVCs interaction study utilizing the physical response of the motor loads. Such scenarios can occur when the system operates with various motor loads. This may result in unfavorable interactions that could negatively affect the reliability of the system. The project included developing an aggregate motor model of the various motor loads connected to the test system. The model was first developed in an EMTP program that is more detailed than using the models in the Positive Sequence Stability (PSS) programs and then was applied to the Hypersim program. This research provided information that will be helpful in the future for placing these aggregate motor models in transient program simulations.
